As Minority Whip under the All-Peoples Congress (APC)-led government (2012-2018), his ability to foster consensus on national matters was invaluable. Leadership in focus — formal portrait
ECOWAS Parliament Leadership
Dr. Tunis served as Speaker of the 5th Legislature of the ECOWAS Parliament from March 2020 to March 2024, a position he held with exceptional dedication and commitment, bringing considerable pride to his country. Dr. Tunis passionately believes that the only way to prevent the exploitation of West Africa’s diverse population is through greater regional integration and by making leadership more accessible to the people. As Speaker, he championed the policy of regional integration and worked diligently to bring the ECOWAS Parliament closer to ordinary citizens. This vision was notably realized when the ECOWAS Parliament hosted its 2nd Extraordinary Session of 2021 in Winneba, the Efutu Traditional Area in Ghana, marking the first time in the Parliament’s history that such a session was held outside of its headquarters.
He continued the ECOWAS Parliament’s esteemed legacy of peacekeeping, mediation, and parliamentary diplomacy, engaging with African Heads of State and numerous international leaders to foster peace and stability in the region. Recognizing the vital importance of peace and democracy in the region, Dr. Tunis has remained actively engaged with stakeholders in areas where democratic values are under threat and the rule of law seems subverted.
